The Great Choko Experiment

Today we planted a choko.  We put a whole fruit straight into the garden, with the top sticking out.  If it takes I will need to come up with a lot of choko recipes.  They grow on a vine and are apparently quite prolific.

Update: after 4 weeks my chokos had just rotted in the ground.  I now have another one in the back of the cupboard, hoping it will sprout so I can try again.

Thanks for the tips. I actually just planted 3 more on the weekend, and I've done it pretty much as you suggested, so hopefully I'll have more success this time.

Hi I have a prolific choko vine. You will need to plant the choko on its side, not upside down as shown in your first picture. Wait until your choko has sprouted place on the ground near a fence where you want it to grow on its side, sprout side up. Mound soil half way up the choko and cover with mulch. I don't ever water mine they have survived very well for the last 3 years with only ever rain water. http://www.roslyndeakincookbooks.com/choko.html has lots of good choko recipes. Cheers Fiona.
